Isn't it amazing how we all want to hit long drives? There is just something so satisfying about being able to hit long drives, the feed back that you get instantly from the contact the clubhead makes with the ball and the knowledge that you got everything "just right". Only golfers will know what I am talking about.
There are even days when you are not playing too well that you hit a drive off line but are happy that you at "least got hold of that one".
So how does one hit long drives?
Before we go there I sincerely hope that you are hitting straight drives, because straight and in play is much better than long and in the rough. So do I pause here and wait for you or do I plough on in the belief that you are hitting the ball straight? OK here's hoping.
To hit long drives you need to have a good technique. A good technique starts with a good grip, stance and posture. Without those three key elements you are never going to hit long drives. Next is a long and low takeaway, on the correct swing path, the correct tension in your torso (coil), the correct start to the downswing, the release of the club through impact and finally the follow through and high finish.
That was simple wasn't it?
In Jack Nicklaus' "Golf My Way" he says that when he wants to hit long drives he concentrates on relaxing. Jack of course had all the other things exactly right, but his main thoughts and concentration were on relaxing. He didn't think about all those things I mentioned because he had practiced them so often that they were ingrained in his subconscious mind. I honestly believe that this is one of the reasons why so many club golfers fail to realize their full potential. We think too much about the mechanics and the outcome instead of letting our subconscious do the work.
I know I never THINK about driving a car - after all these years it is such a normal part of my routine it is almost like breathing. But stand over a golf ball where someone has decided to put out a marker that says "Longest Drive Hole" and all sorts of thoughts flood your mind. The grip tenses up, arms freeze and the mind turns to porridge. Now take a look at the guys that regularly hit long drives and see how they relish this challenge. They relax and everything falls into place. Why? Because they are used to hitting long drives and trust their subconscious to do the job.
Hitting long drives is about getting everything right through impact with the greatest amount of clubhead speed.
This article is too simple to give you drills to get everything right - I did say earlier on that you need to have everything right - but I can show you how to get greater clubhead speed in order to hit long drives.
For maximum clubhead speed take your driver by the head (that is upside down with the grip at floor level) and take a normal swing releasing your right hand (right handed players) just before what would be impact. Continue through to a high finish with only your left hand on the club. You will hear a 'swoosh" sound. Repeat the exercise at different tempos using a proper golf swing until you find a rhythm that gives you the loudest "swoosh". Do this over and over until you have got that rhythm, tempo, action down to a fine art.
Now repeat this over and over keeping both hands on the club throughout the swing and making sure you are still getting the same loud(est) "swoosh". That is it - that is your maximum clubhead speed - the speed at which you will hit your longest drives. Do not try and swing faster than this with your arms or anything else.
So to hit long drives you need to have a good technique and maximum clubhead speed through impact. Hitting a draw will also give more distance than a fade, but if your natural shot is a fade you will still hit long drives at maximum "swoosh".
There's nothing quite like the feeling of hitting a drive in "in the screw" and watching it soar through the air right down the middle of the fairway.
Yes you can hit longer drives and probably just need a little guidance. To start with you need to have the correct basic set up before you can start utilizing the full power of your body's coil generated by your BIG muscles.
Why not head over to my website and learn how to hit longer, straighter drives and generally improve your game?
It won't be long before you are booming those drives down the middle of the fairway.
Hit 'em long, hit 'em straight.
Happy golfing!
